Baikal skullcap is a flowering herb whose root contains flavonoids, such as baicalin, that are thought to influence calming brain signaling and inflammation. People mostly look at it for low mood, but the research for depression symptoms is very limited: one trial of 177 people found no clear difference in depression or anxiety symptoms. That trial tested it combined with saffron rather than on its own, so it says little about skullcap by itself, and more studies are needed.
