Emollients are moisturizing creams, lotions and ointments that soften the skin and help it hold water by forming a thin layer that slows moisture loss from the surface. People mostly look at them for dry, rough or irritated skin, but little research on them has been reviewed here so far, so there are no findings to report yet. Until more studies are looked at, it's hard to say how well they work, for whom, or how one type compares with another.
