Motor imagery is the mental rehearsal of a movement without actually performing it, which activates many of the same brain regions that plan and control the real action. People mostly look at it to support skill learning and recovery of movement, but little research on it has been reviewed here so far. For now, it is best understood as a mental practice technique whose effects remain to be sorted out.
