Whole Coffee Fruit Extract

Whole coffee fruit extract comes from the red fruit around the coffee bean, and it is rich in plant compounds like chlorogenic acid that may influence how brain cells signal and grow. People mostly look at it for memory and thinking in adults with age-related slips, and the evidence is limited: two industry-affiliated trials found better working memory and reaction time, but the only independent trial found no cognitive benefit and more mental fatigue. Studies were small and short, and the brain-protection findings rest mostly on animal or lab work.

BDNF Levels

Three small human studies (total n~38) from the same industry-affiliated group showed significant acute increases in plasma BDNF (up to 143% with 100mg WCFE). However, a larger RCT (n=138) using WCCE + phosphatidylserine found no significant between-group BDNF difference. All positive BDNF studies are from FutureCeuticals-affiliated researchers and have very small sample sizes.

Neuroprotection

A small pilot RCT (n=8) in older adults with subjective cognitive impairment found that 100mg WCCE increased functional connectivity between brain regions involved in decision-making and altered glutamate/GABA ratios. Preclinical evidence for the key constituent chlorogenic acid shows neuroprotective effects in Alzheimer's disease mouse models and BDNF-TrkB signaling modulation in rat hippocampus, but no animal studies test WCFE specifically.
