Can any supplement slow early puberty?
No supplement has good evidence that it slows early puberty. Herbal formulas lowered puberty hormones in 9 small trials with 650 children, but the formulas varied and the evidence is weak (grade C). Low vitamin D goes along with early puberty, yet giving it has not been shown to delay puberty. Lavender and tea tree oil skin products are tied to early breast growth in case reports. Treatment decisions belong with a pediatric endocrinologist.
What the studies found
- Grade B. The standard treatment is a prescription GnRH agonist, a hormone-blocking medicine given by injection that pauses the early signal from the brain. In a 2025 review of randomized and non-randomized studies, treated girls reached a taller final height, with bigger gains when puberty began before age 8, though later polycystic ovary syndrome may be more likely. (Yang 2025; Latronico 2026)
- Grade C. Herbal formulas, mainly Chinese herbal medicine, are the only supplement-type products with trials. In 9 trials with 650 children, mixed herbal medicines lowered estradiol, a sex hormone, more than control treatments; effects on bone age had very low certainty. A 2025 review of 25 studies found smaller breast and uterine size, and one placebo-controlled trial that added pomegranate extract to the prescription drug in 225 girls for 3 months reported better hormone and growth measures. (Lee 2020; Wang 2025; Liu 2017)
- Grade C. Vitamin D is linked, but not shown to help. Across 15 observational studies, 2,145 children with precocious puberty had lower vitamin D levels than 2,063 without it, and the authors asked for randomized trials. Another review reported lower hormones when vitamin D was added to the prescription drug, but its abstract gives no trial sizes. (Cheng 2023; Wu 2023)
- Grade D. Some skin products may start breast growth. Three boys developed breasts while using products with lavender and tea tree oils, and 3 girls and 1 boy did so with lavender fragrances; growth went away after the products stopped. These are case reports. (Henley 2007; Ramsey 2019)
Who should be careful
- Every reader here is asking about a child: give no supplement or herbal product for puberty without the child's clinician.
- Herbal formulas in these trials were made and given under specialist care, often alongside the prescription drug. No interaction studies with GnRH agonists were found outside those trials.
- Vitamin D has an age-based upper limit for children; check the NIH ODS vitamin D fact sheet and test before giving more.
- Stop lavender or tea tree oil lotions, shampoos and fragrances on a child who shows breast growth, and tell the doctor.
- See a doctor promptly for breast growth or pubic hair before age 8 in girls or 9 in boys, a fast growth spurt, or headaches or vision changes. (Latronico 2026)
Try first
- Start with the pediatrician, who may refer you to a pediatric endocrinologist. The 2026 guideline suggests watching girls with breast development between 7 and 8 at exams every 4 to 6 months, because slowly progressing puberty often needs no treatment. (Latronico 2026)
- Keep a healthy weight as a family goal. Higher body mass index (weight for height) is linked with early puberty, though that is an association. (Wang 2025)
