Condition
Cardiovascular Health
Cardiovascular health describes how well the heart and blood vessels move blood around the body, shaped by blood pressure and how flexible the arteries are. The clearest evidence involves blood pressure: a pooled analysis found aged garlic extract lowered systolic pressure by about 8 mmHg in people with hypertension, and trials found more sodium raised pressure, especially in salt-sensitive people. Bilberry and orange peel also showed moderate evidence, though those studies were small.

| Grade | Outcome | Effect | Size | Studies | People | Studies list |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Cardiac Contractility Multiple in vitro and animal studies demonstrate higenamine increases cardiac contractile force (positive inotropy). In isolated guinea pig papillary muscle, higenamine shifted the calcium curve leftward and enhanced isoproterenol-induced responses. In porcine ventricular myocardial cells, it increased action potential amplitude and duration by activating slow calcium channels, and abolished potassium-induced conduction blocks. Additional studies in cultured rat heart cells and guinea pig heart failure models confirmed cardiotonic properties via beta-adrenergic agonism. | Grade | Outcome | Effect | Size | Studies | People | Studies list |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Blood Lipids In diabetic KK-Ay mice, palmatine decreased serum total cholesterol and triglycerides while increasing HDL cholesterol. These lipid-modulating effects parallel berberine but appear weaker. No human clinical data are available. | Improves (the measure goes down) | Small effect | 1 study |
Rauwolscine
- Sympathetic Nervous System Activity: improves
| Grade | Outcome | Effect | Size | Studies | People | Studies list |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sympathetic Nervous System Activity A 1964 preclinical study examined the effects of 3-epi-alpha-yohimbine (rauwolscine) on the sympathetic nervous system, consistent with its known alpha-2 adrenergic antagonist mechanism. Evidence is limited to this single early pharmacological investigation with no modern human replication. | Improves (the measure goes up) | Small effect | 1 study |

Terminalia Chebula
- Cardiovascular Health: improves
| Grade | Outcome | Effect | Size | Studies | People | Studies list |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Cardiovascular Health In animal models, ethanolic extract (500 mg/kg) ameliorated isoproterenol-induced myocardial damage. Studies in cholesterol-fed rabbits showed anti-atherogenic activity with liver cholesterol decreased by 50% and heart cholesterol by 60%. One RCT protocol for coronary artery disease adjunct therapy is registered but results not yet available. | Improves (the measure goes up) | Small effect | 1 study |
Mondo grass
- Cardiovascular Protection: improves
| Grade | Outcome | Effect | Size | Studies | People | Studies list |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Cardiovascular Protection Animal models suggest cardioprotective effects from Ophiopogon japonicus saponins. Traditional use includes heart palpitations, but no controlled human studies on the isolated herb have validated cardiovascular benefits. | Improves (the measure goes up) | Small effect |
Red Berry Powder
- Cardiovascular Health: improves
| Grade | Outcome | Effect | Size | Studies | People | Studies list |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Cardiovascular Health No direct clinical evidence exists for red berry powder blends on cardiovascular outcomes. Benefits are extrapolated from individual berry studies showing anthocyanin-rich berries may improve endothelial function and reduce cardiovascular risk markers. Mixed berry powders assume these effects combine, but this has not been directly tested. | Improves (the measure goes up) | Small effect |
Sacred lotus
- Lipid Profile: improves
| Grade | Outcome | Effect | Size | Studies | People | Studies list |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Lipid Profile In animal models of diabetes and obesity, lotus leaf extracts improved lipid profiles including reductions in total cholesterol and triglycerides. Effects appear mediated through modulation of lipid metabolism and adipogenesis pathways. No human data available. | Improves (the measure goes down) | Moderate effect |

Safety notes in the studies
- This effect is both potentially therapeutic and a significant drug interaction safety concern, particularly with warfarin.
- Reduced LDL-C in at-risk populations
- Preclinical evidence and reviews indicate NAD+ homeostasis is disrupted in failing hearts and that NAD+ supplementation may prevent adverse cardiac remodeling by improving mitochondrial redox state (Mericskay, 2016; Pei et al., 2022).
